Network Protocols

In the world of technology, communicating worldwide will not be possible if there were no fixed ‘standards’ that will govern the way users communicate for data as well as the way our devices treat those data. Here we will be discussing these standard sets of rules.

“Protocols” which are a set of rules that help in governing the way a particular technology will function for communication. In other words, it can be said that the protocols are digital languages implemented in the form of networking algorithms. There are different networks and network protocols, user’s use while surfing.

The following groups have defined and published different network protocols:

  • The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
  • The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
  • The International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
  • The International Telecommunications Union (ITU)
  • The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)

Types of Protocols :

  • Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
  • Internet Protocol (IP)
  • User Datagram Protocol (UDP)
  • Post office Protocol (POP)
  • Simple mail transport Protocol (SMTP)
  • File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
  • Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
  • Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS)
  • IMAP
  • Telnet
  • Gopher
